The Holly and the Ivy English Traditional The holly and the ivy When they are full grown, Of all the trees in the wood The holly bears the crown. The rising of the sun The running of the deer, The playing of the organ Sweet singing in the choir. The holly wears a blossom As white as any flower, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ To be our Saviour. The rising of the sun, The running of the deer, The playing of the organ, Sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a berry As red as any blood, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ To do sinners good. The rising of the sun, The running of the deer, The playing of the organ, Sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a prickle As sharp as any thorn, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ On Christmas Day in the morn. The rising of the sun, The running of the deer, The playing of the organ, Sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a bark As bitter as any gall, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, To redeem us all. The rising of the sun, The running of the deer, The playing of the organ, Sweet singing in the choir. The holly and the ivy, When they are full grown, Of all the trees in the wood, The holly bears the crown. The rising of the sun, The running of the deer, The playing of the organ, Sweet singing in the choir

Come Thou Long Expected Jesus Public Domain. Words: Charles Wesley. Music: Rowland Prichard. Come Thou long-expected Jesus Born to set Thy people free; From our fears and sins release us, Let us find our rest in Thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, Hope of all the saints Thou art; Dear desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart. Born Thy people to deliver, Born a child and yet a King, Born to reign in us forever, Now Thy gracious kingdom bring. By Thine own eternal Spirit Rule in all our hearts alone; By Thine all sufficient merit, Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

What Child is this English Traditional What Child is this who, laid to rest On Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing; Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary. Why lies He in such mean estate, Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians, fear, for sinners here The silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, The cross be borne for me, for you. Hail, hail the Word made flesh, The Babe, the Son of Mary. So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh, Come peasant, king to own Him; The King of kings salvation brings, Let loving hearts enthrone Him. Raise, raise a song on high, The virgin sings her lullaby. Joy, joy for Christ is born, The Babe, the Son of Mary.

The Wexford Carol English Traditional Good people all, this Christmas time, consider well and bear in mind what our good God for us has done, in sending His beloved Son with Mary holy we should pray to God with love this Christmas Day in Bethlehem upon the morn there was a blest Messiah born. The night before that happy tide, the noble virgin and her guide were long time seeking up and down to find a lodging in the town. but mark how all things came to pass: from every door repelled, alas! as long foretold, their refuge all was but a humble oxen stall. Near Bethlehem did shepherds keep their flocks of lambs and feeding sheep, to whom God’s angels did appear, which put the shepherds in great fear. “Prepare and go”, the angels said, “To Bethlehem, be not afraid ! for there you’ll find, this happy morn, a princely Babe, sweet Jesus born.” With thankful heart and joyful mind, the shepherds went the babe to find. and as God’s angel has foretold, they did our Savior Christ behold. within a manger he was laid, and by his side the virgin maid, attending to the Lord of Life, who came on earth to end all strife.

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear Words by Edmund Sears, 1849. Music by Richard s. Willis, 1850. Sam Phillips/Bruce Cockburn arrangement It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, goodwill to men, From heav'n's all-gracious King." The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come, With peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats O'er all the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains, They bend on hovering wing; And ever o'er its Babel sound The blessed angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife The world has suffered long Beneath the angel-strain have rolled Two thousand years of wrong And man at war with man hears not The love song which they bring Oh hush the noise, ye men of strife And hear the angels sing And ye, beneath life's crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painful steps and slow, Take heart for comfort love and hope Come swiftly on the wing. O rest beside the weary road, And hear the angels sing. For lo, the days are hastening, By prophet bards foretold, When, with the ever-circling years, Comes round the age of gold, When peace shall over all the earth It’s ancient splendours fling and the whole world send back the song Which now the angels sing.

Christmas Bells Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, arr. John Gorka I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play And wild and sweet, the words repeat Of peace on earth, good will to men Peace on earth, good will to men I thought how, as the day had come The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along the unbroken song Of peace on earth, good will to men Peace on earth, good will to men And in despair, I bowed my head "There is no peace on earth," I said For hate is strong, and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men Peace on earth, good will to men Then pealed the bells, more loud and deep God is not dead, nor doth he sleep The wrong shall fail, the right prevail With peace on earth, good will to men Peace on earth, good will to men I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play And wild and sweet, the words repeat Of peace on earth, good will to men Peace on earth, good will to men Peace on earth, good will to men

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen English Trad. 15th century God rest ye merry, gentlemen Let nothing you dismay Remember, Christ, our Saviour Was born on Christmas day To save us all from Satan's power When we were gone astray O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy In Bethlehem, in Israel, This blessed Babe was born And laid within a manger Upon this blessed morn The which His Mother Mary Did nothing take in scorn O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy From God our Heavenly Father A blessed Angel came; And unto certain Shepherds Brought tidings of the same: How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by Name. O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy "Fear not then," said the Angel, "Let nothing you affright, This day is born a Saviour Of a pure Virgin bright, To free all those who trust in Him From Satan's power and might." O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy The shepherds at those tidings Rejoiced much in mind, And left their flocks a-feeding In tempest, storm and wind: And went to Bethlehem straightway The Son of God to find. O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy And when they came to Bethlehem Where our dear Saviour lay, They found Him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay; His Mother Mary kneeling down, Unto the Lord did pray. O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All other doth deface. O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy

Thank You for downloading this recording! Your money is a donation that goes directly to support local music and artists in the Triangle area of North Carolina, through Emmaus Way.

This project has been a labor of love that began at the end of September 2010, and was released November 28, 2010. It was recorded mostly in a single session in the large room at the Second Story-- which is not actually all that large to have that many folks and microphones! What you are hearing is the fruit of these players, and their willingness to dive in ‘live’ and capture these performances, much like we do on Sunday nights at our gatherings at Emmaus Way. But their professionalism and skills have blended in a way that has come to feel greater than the sum of its parts to us, and we hope that as you listen, begins to feel something like that to you.

The project came out of a love for Christmas music, and a desire to add to the musical liturgy, Rite 7, that we created a couple of years ago. We have worship ‘stations’ each advent where folks participate in a communion of mulled wine and sweet bread, contemplative prayer, a station of creativity, and station related to service. This music is meant to accompany those stations, and to provide a liturgical journey as we make our way through the four weeks leading up to Christmas, and it is meant to accompany you in your journey through Advent, and you negotiate all that is in your life, the joys and sorrows and everything in between.

We chose the songs to highlight the revolutionary message of the good news of advent that is often sublimated by the cultural sentimentality and materialism that is almost inescapable this time of year. Many of these songs are several hundred years old, and come from a tradition of singing to raise money for the poor, with messages that highlight the poverty of the Christ-child, that message of hope and love, but also justice and mercy and transformation for a broken world.

A few examples come to mind; Christmas Bells, with music by John Gorka, is a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem written during the Civil War, and asks the question of what ‘peace on earth and goodwill to men’ can mean in the face of so much death and bloodshed. ‘Holy is His Name’ is a beautiful version of Mary’s song from the New Testament, written by John Michael Talbot, which has her marveling at the meaning of this baby she carries in her womb, and it’s impact on the whole of creation. The songs have been arranged in an order that loosely takes you through expectation, to birth, and life in the ‘not yet.’
We hope that, as you listen to these songs, you are encouraged, that you feel cared for, and that you are able to catch a glimpse, or even a vision of the kingdom of God that Jesus declared ‘is at hand.’ We know it is not complete, and we pray and yearn for that day, but we celebrate the Christ-child who as an adult asked us to pray with him, ‘Thy kingdom come on earth, as it is in heaven.”
